Arriving at the racetrack seeing cars lapping at a pretty impressive pace I couldn't help but feel a frisson of unease .. could my 65 year old brother Steve with very challenging learning difficulties, both mental and physical really drive a car? Well, the relaxed, friendly and professional crew of Speed Of Sight evidently had no such concerns! So onto the first challenge .. the balaclava and helmet. He wasn't too impressed with his face squashed into to the offending items, but with this indignity over he perused the controls and seemed happy this vehicle would match his expectations. A touch on the throttle .. and Stevie and his Co-driver were off! We watched in amazement as the car lapped around the circuit. Was this really happening. Years of listening to car engines, looking at the controls and being told he would never be given the chance. And he wasn't hanging around .. Steve evidently had the need for Speed! The amazing staff and volunteers made his dream come true. Steve is not a man of many words but his beaming smile spoke a thousand words. With early dementia his zest for life has started to dim, yet his face lit up with a joy and happiness we rarely see now. It was a truly magical moment. Phil his carer, myself and his mum were deeply moved. We can't express enough our thanks and gratitude to the wonderful team at Speed of Sight for a truly magical afternoon .. it was awesome.
