Michael's Story

Hi, my name is Michael Parkin and I am registered blind due to a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa.

I first found out about Speed of Sight from my mobility trainer, and as someone who used to be a road user and has a keen interest in all things cars, I jumped at the chance to register for a driving experience with Speed of Sight. 

My first driving experience was at Llandow Circuit in South Wales in March 2017, and what an experience it was!  I went from being an 'observer' to being a participant, and the thrill that gave me is indescribable, along with the impact it has since had on my life.

For years I felt that driving of any description would be something that I'd never be able to do, but thanks to the amazing guys at Speed of Sight, that feeling has changed, giving me the confidence to believe that 'I can' rather than 'I can't'. To sit in that car alongside an instructor and feel that you have control is a massive confidence boost that inevitably spills over into day to day life. 

I've done 6 experiences with the team, at various locations around the country, and eagerly await being able to participate in number 7.
